Methodological Remover / Orange Haunter, 2006
For Methodological Remover / Orange Haunter, the artist sits on a wooden chair situated within a twenty-four foot long architectural framework. Cloaked in a white sheet, he stares out of the framing at a rear-projection video of a ghost slowly swaying against an orange field. Minimal percussive sounds accompany the ghost’s sway, but as the sway continues, the rhythm slowly evolves into a complex polyrhythm. At the crest of its development the ghost vanishes into a field of scrambled text at which point, Setzer removes the white sheet and walks the length of the structure. Crouching on the floor at the far end of the framing, he reaches into a hole to fish out gobs of white substance which he slowly coats his body in. The cycle recurs every 7 minutes and by the end of the performance, Setzer is covered head to toe in the white substance.
