Simultaneous Repellents (Repressed Sentient, Oppressed Séance), 2008
The performance, Simultaneous Repellents (Repressed Sentient, Oppressed Séance), debuted at the University College London’s Slade School of Art (London, England). The work featured Setzer (dressed as a construction worker) venturing back and forth from his post in an architectural framework of exposed timber. With salt collected from the floor of the framed station, he generated salt “landmarks” around the gallery. The rear wall of the gallery was dominated by a large video projection of a ghost that swayed slowly behind a constant stream of common adjectives. At the end of each cycle of adjectives a buzzer sounded, sending the artist back to the salt filled structure where he remained until the stream of text recommenced.
